A planning application has been submitted HDC to convert Dooleys into residential properties. This is sad news about the potential closure of an Easingwold business which was originally founded in 1937, it also means further loss of commercial properties in our town.
Dooleys Planning Application July 2018 Easingwold Town Council have published their Spring Newsletter for 2018 with a summary of the last 12 months and plans for the future.
Good use of one of our Rockin All Over the Wold photos there! (FB photo album) Work has begun on the Kier development "Hambleton Chase", off the Stillington Road, between Easingwold Town Football Ground and Leasmires Avenue. The background to this is controversial due to the original proposal from Gladman being rejected both by Easingwold Town Council and Hambleton District Council. However, this was overturned on appeal in 2015. Kier are planning to build 175 new homes, including 88 in the "affordable" category.
Sales are expected to start May 2018 Kier Hambleton Chase, with completion of the site due Spring 2022 - here's the site plan (issued Aug 2016). But what about our new supermarket planned for the York Road? Jomast finally got the go ahead in 2014 but it seems that ship has sailed due to the fall off in the building of new large supermarkets. In 2016 Jomast began pushing for a "revised mixed use development". There would still be a petrol station, a smaller convenience store and some "health related use" but also the addition of 80 houses - Jomast Mixed Use Proposal. This is currently under appeal. Part of Easingwold's charm is the number of small independent businesses, amongst them various coffee and refreshment outlets. At the moment it's difficult to believe that we need more coffee outlets but it appears that Costa Coffee disagrees (Northern Echo 16th Jan 2017).
Some might argue this brings new employment opportunities and ensures the old HSBC building is put to good use; but surely the addition of a large generic chain potentially threatens the future of our existing outlets and risks damaging the unique character of the town. Here's the HDC application (67 objections so far at the time of writing). Easingwold Town Council has agreed that the Easingwold Cycle Sportive should become an annual fixture raising money for local causes. This year's event takes place on 6th August in aid of "Bike 4 Bailey"
On 1st April 2017 Easingwold Library will become Easingwold Community Library run by volunteers. When the library was threatened with closure local people stepped up to save this valuable resource. See their Facebook Page for more information.
Hambleton District Council is currently preparing a new 'Local Plan' which outlines housing, employment, retail and leisure developments up to 2035. See the current Preferred Options Consultation Document for Easingwold. A draft Local Plan is expected to be ready for consultation in Autumn 2017.
